The Pirelli Calendar, the most iconic communication represented by the Pirelli Group, truly celebrates female beauty since 1964. Having featured artistic nude images of models such as Ines Sastre, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Kate Moss to name a few, the calendar has reached quite an important objective: moving the calendar from dirty garages to fabulous museums.
Each year, the Pirelli Calendar Photographers have individually interpreted their view of feminine beauty, turning the outcome into a sophisticated and glamorous result. So let’s have a look at how the imagery of the calendar changed since the 60′s!
Photographers Harri Peccinotti, Francis Giacobetti and Clive Arrowsmith will be the only photographers to imortalize images for two consecutive years in all the calendar’s history.
After 1971, it’s now the turn of photographers Sara Moon and Allen Jones who represent the calendar for 1972 and 1973. Their photos already start to get a very different twist from previous works of Francis Giacobetti and Harri Peccinotti as photos in those years seem to be more romantic and more influenced by classical art, especially Jones’ shots of 1973
With the end of the 70′s, romanticism fades out from photos of the Pirelli Calendar and some sexy flair is added to them thanks to works of photographers such as Hans Furer, Uwe Omner and Norman Parkinson. Such flair will remain a fixed point of Pirelli images from 1974 to the 80′s.
After a few years of sexy and fun photography, it is time for the body issue! The 90′s are an iconic period in fashion and glamour photography as we start to have a taste of the supermodel era as photographed by photography heroes such as Herb Ritts and Richard Avedon in 1994 and 1997 respectively.
With the advent of the New Millennium… it’s time for Glamour!! And who better than Mario Testino is able to represent sophisticated yet sexy glamour shots?!
And to continue on the same streak, it’s time for Patrick Demarchelier to shine! Photographs by Patrick Demarchelier for the 2005 Pirelli Calendar are somewhat unique. Partick presents models in black and white.. such a different effect compared to his classic wirks featuring blod colors and lots of movement! His photos of Adriana Lima, Erin Wasson and Naomi Cambell are fantastic!
2010 gets pretty sexy for Pirelli as this year’s photographer is the eccentric Terry Richardson! Terry chose a hot location for this photoshoot: Bahia, Brazil! And who would make a hotter calendar than Vicotria’s Secret Models?
And so we reached 2012! The photographer for this year is the amazing Mario Sorrenti -Italian photographer based in NYC known for his exquisite nudes published in top magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar (and also for his past relationship with Kate Moss!). The shoot took place in the amazing waters of Corsica decorated with amazing model bodies of the calibre of Kate Moss, Isabeli Fontana and Milla Jovovic.
Mario portrays his models almost as if they were nymphs living in a forrest – their bodies perfectly fade with the background making the shots look more romantic than sexy.
Photographer Mario Sorrenti tells Fashionologie: “Originally I thought I was going to do very sexy pictures, and when we got there I realized that I didn’t want the pictures to be sexy at all. We tried to keep it very simple, there were times where we did just photographs with the model and myself and there was no one around. I think that was the moment when I was able to capture some of the most beautiful photographs . . . You kind of lose yourself and you go with the flow of the moment and just let things happen”. And they happened indeed!
So even this year the Pirelli Calendar left us breathless! So breathless that we’re already wandering who the next photographer and the next models will be!! Unfortunately, still another year to go but.. we’ll keep you posted for sure so stay tuned!
