By now almost everyone has watched and is still talking about ‘Black Swan’,
the much awaited critically acclaimed film starring Natalie Portman.
The movie has been the talking point for many reasons lately, one of them being
the pretty costumes. The lovely tutus that feature in the film were a collaboration
between fashion’s favourite sisters: Kate and Laura Mulleavy – the mavericks behind
the label Rodarte – and the film’s head costume designer Amy Westcott.
Despite the costumes being a hit with the majority of the public, there was some
controversy surrounding the credits between the hip label and the head costumier.
There are also those who think that the costumes weren’t imaginative enough,
considering Rodarte’s involvement, as the Mulleavy sisters are well known for their
avant-garde designs and their dark and perverse themes, which often draw on
Japanese horror movies.
If you are a regular at the ballet, you will find that the costumes were indeed pretty
conventional. Feathers and Swarovsky crystals are often seen in big ballet productions
so the fashion critics do have a point there. Having said that, there is no denying that
