Long gone are the days when models wouldn’t dream of going near a tattoo parlour, for
pure fear of not being casted to work with the most prestigious brands.
Top supermodels like Christy Turlington, Stephanie Seymour, Amber Smith, Carre Otis, Amy Wesson among many others, are well known for sporting one or more tattoos on their bodies, which they use to express themselves and that – let me tell you mum – has not prevented them at all from having a successful career.
And to be honest, (shhhhhh!!!! don’t tell anyone but) a lot of them get covered in body
make up when doing photo shoots anyway – so getting a tattoo done these days, isn’t
really an issue.
Nevermind being an issue, tattoos seem to have become the latest craze in fashionland
as we have seen them spreading overtime, like fabulous viruses, from the glossy pages
of Vogue, to advertising campaigns, all the way to the catwalks of the hottest shows
of the coming season.
Remember that fabulous story that illustrated the pages of Vogue Italy back in 2008?
Shot by Steven Meisel, it featured model Meghan Collinson totally covered in tattoos,
in an Amy Winehouse meets Gustav Klimt kinda scenario…
The images became so iconic that they made their way into a fantastic
1000 piece jigsaw puzzle, isn’t it adorable?
And who can forget that fab video campaign of Gisele Bundchen sporting an all over the body tattoo for her very own brand Ipanema sandals?
You can watch the video right here:
And guess what the hottest new Chanel accessory for Spring/Summer 2010 is?
Yup. You guessed. Chanel tattoos. Yes you heard correctly mother, I said Chanel
T-A-T-T-O-O-S. Aren’t they fab?!? Now this is what I call lust at first sight.
Ever wanted to own an original Chanel bracelet and could not afford one? Well now you can
have 6, with pearls and all, at a fraction of the price and guaranteed to last you forever!
(if you don’t choose to go for the rub-on ones that the models are wearing that is).
Oh! I can just picture myself like the new version of the classic old lady wearing a Chanel suit.
I’d be the new old lady wearing a Chanel tattoo. Rock on!!!!
But the trend of designer tattoos doesn’t stop at Chanel’s. Just like your favourite brands, they come in all sorts, from Louis Vuitton:
To Marc Jacobs:
So what is this trend all about? Well aparently it seems to be about a new level of brand
owning. Why own the bag or the shoes, if you can own THE ACTUAL BRAND! Makes sense
don’t you think? The bag of the season will be so passe the next season but the Chanel,
Lanvin, Marc Jacobs or Louis Vuitton logo, sister, are bound to always be in Vogue.
Oh! I am sooooo tempted to cancel my appointment with the dentist – once again –
to replace it with an appointment at my local tattoo parlour (just like I did when I
was 17) Just don’t tell my mum. 😉
So, designer tattoos…. Yay or nay?
