Just recently I had to opportunity to interview Francisco D’Orey, a well known professional Portuguese model who has been working successfully in the modeling industry for many years. Throughout his career, and at the age of 41, he has achieved what most models can dream of, a successful international career thanks to which he has been on magazine covers, catalogue shootings with fashion magazines and advertising campaigns such as Men’s Health, GQ and Jaguar Eye Wear respectively.
Who is Francisco D’Orey? Below these lines you will have the opportunity to find out how he got into the modeling industry, how he combined his modeling career with studies and his experience as an international model.
“Born and raised in Portugal, I grew up close to the beach in Lisbon. From early ages I have developed a passion for the ocean and the waves. One of my first sports was body surfing and then later on body boarding, which became my number one activity. Throughout the years I have practised also Karate, Rugby, Horse riding, Swimming, Volley, Snowboarding and many others. Above all I consider myself an active model, I love doing what I do and I love a good challenge.”
“I have a master’s degree in Organic Chemistry. Throughout my studies, I was part-time modeling and I found it useful both money and experience-wise. For a couple of years after finishing my studies, I was working for an Oil Company and organized several successful Events. At one point there was a moment where I felt I needed a change, so I decided to go back to modeling. This time, modeling became my full time job.”
“I was mainly booked for TV as an actor – commercials and participations in Series and soap operas. It has all quickly evolved more and more into photographic sphere and I started traveling. Modeling gave me the opportunity to live and work in some of the most amazing cities all over the world, such as NYC, Los Angeles, Sydney, Milan, Hamburg, London, Paris etc. I have always tried to bring something else to my trips. Sometimes, I carried my board if the city was close to the ocean, at other times I’d visit interesting places around and experience local cultures. I love to read and I always carry a book wherever I go.”
ModelManagement: How did you get in the modeling world?
Francisco D’Orey: When I was a student, a surfer friend was modeling and told me about it. Never thought a man could do that for a living. I went to his agency, which soon became to be my first one. Only years later, after quitting, finishing my graduate in Organic Chemistry and working for 4 years I went back to that same agency and took it more seriously.
MM: Can you tell us about your first job as a model?
FD: TV campaign for Portugal, was fun because that’s what I was more into, acting.
MM: As you told us before, you went back to the modeling industry after working in the Oil Company, what where the reasons to return to this profession for a second time?
FD: I had worked in Repsol for a couple of years and was managing a company organizing events at the time. The opportunity came to act on a couple TV series and a commercial after that. Had the best feedback from the market so I thought it was a good time to get back to the agency I had left in College and make some extra work. Soon after I was full time modeling.
MM: What has been your most spectacular model experience till now?
FD: It’s been all fantastic with the traveling and rich human experience involved but had some highlights like trips to Thailand, living in New York, Cape Town and Sydney. Working close to some Supermodels made some of those highlights.
MM: What can you tell us about the agencies that represent you around the world, what role are they playing for you and in the industry in general?
FD: I have very good agencies but since I moved back to Europe that’s where the work is now more focused. Only occasionally I fly overseas these days. These agencies get to promote me locally with their inside knowledge of clients. Also help me with trip details and logistics whenever needed. Some of my bookers became my friends too- I’m very thankful for my agents in general.
MM: A model that has experience, has been traveling so much, and nowadays is being booked worldwide must have fascinating plans for the future, can you tell us about them?
FD: It’s been a great run for sure. Hopefully will continue, but recently I decided to be more based in Portugal where I’m from. This for me is exciting as I get to surf more and see my old friends and family more often. Weather is also good in Lisbon. In the present days it’s so easy and quick to get anywhere in the world.
MM: Internet and Social Media are essential devices for someone that is working in the modeling industry? What Social Networks are you using?
FD: I stopped using my Facebook account some months ago but I’m planing on returning at some point. Modelmanagment.com is the only page I have personally set online. I think social media can definitely help anyone in most lines of work.
MM: Modelmanagement.com connects models and model agencies with photographers, production companies and other professionals working in the business. Nowadays, with the importance of internet, do you think a website such as modelmanagement.com, can be a useful tool to make new contacts and increase presence in the fashion and modeling industry?
FD: I think it’s good to be in people’s mind and be reachable when you’re a model. Modelmanagement.com is specific to who it connects us to. I like the fact that is directed to a target such as producers and photographers. Only good things can come from it.
MM: Who do you admire the most in the modeling industry and why?
FD: It’s a beautiful but tough world. I admire everyone that stays long enough and keeps its integrity.
MM: What advice would you give to aspiring models that are willing to achieve what you did?
FD: Don’t lose track of who you are and realize that this world is full of opportunities. It’s all about finding them.
