Not all of today’s models originally aspired to enter the modelling world; but with a combination of luck, packing the right stuff and being in the right place at the right time, they were able to become some of the most famous faces in the world. If one thing can be learned from any of these stories, it is that you aren’t going to get scouted by staying at home. Check out how some of the world’s most famous models made it into the modelling industry!
Model, actress and entrepreneur Lily Cole was scouted by fellow model and scout Benjamin Hart whilst out with her friends for fast-food. Initially, Lily was taken aback by Hart’s keenness and refused at first. Lily then changed her mind and agreed to that photo shoot that would ultimately kick-start her career!
Cindy Crawford was working on a farm pollinating corn fields as a summer job when her photograph was taken by a local newspaper photographer. The photo received lots of attention and boosted Cindy’s confidence enough to enter herself into a John Casablanca “Look of the Year Contest”. It was there that she received an offer from Storm Model Management and her modelling career took off from there.
Linda was no stranger to modelling, starting at a very young age she would dabble here and there with small modelling and catalogue work. She decided to enter the “Miss Teen Niagara Contest” and was scouted by the Elite New York Agency. Demand for Linda increased modestly but her career was nearly cut short when she decided to throw in the towel after issues with a Japanese photo shoot request. Linda decided to refocus on school and it was only following the advice of her mother that she decided to give modelling one final try and moved to New York.
One of the most iconic British models of all time, Kate Moss was discovered by the founder of Storm Model Management at JFK airport. Kate was only 14 at the time and was returning home with her family after a holiday in the Bahamas. Young Moss continued to work with Storm alongside her school-life, but it wasn’t until she finished school that she could dedicate herself fully to modelling and that is when things took off and she became the supermodel, Kate Moss, we know and love today.
Arguably one of the most famous supermodels of all time, Naomi Campbell always had a taste for the spotlight. Featuring in music videos from The Culture Blue and Bob Marley; Naomi was scouted for modelling at the tender age of 15. She was spotted window-shopping at Covent Garden in London and was an immediate hit with the modelling-world and by 16 had already made an appearance on the British Elle front cover.
David Gandy joined the modelling world after his friends entered him in a male model competition. It was during this competition that he was scouted by Select Model Management and things took off from there. At that time, the male model industry was dominated by skinnier and more androgynous models, David’s bulkier and muscular-build was definitely new territory. Despite this, David was, and continues to be, one of the most famous male models in the world and will forever be known as the man who laid down the ground for the shift in the male model appearances.
Tyson is a major heavyweight amongst male models, accomplishing a great deal in his time and being the driving force and face of Ralph Lauren’s Polo Sportswear Line. However, how he was discovered is less exciting. Tyson was scouted whilst he was hanging out with his friends at a park in New York for a Hip-Hop magazine. It was through connections that Tyson was recruited by Ralph Lauren and his career stormed.
At 17, Sean was scouted when the famous fashion stylist and judge, Nolé Marin was searching through MySpace pictures and came across Sean’s prom photos.
