How to become a runway model?
While the education requirements to become a runway model are rather flexible, there are many skills you’ll need to possess to forge a successful modeling career. You’ll need to be flexible, dependable, reliable, hardworking and capable of taking direction. Whether you are a runway model or acting in a television commercial, you need to understand and be able to convey the emotion and attitude of the brand you’re representing. However, in relation to academics, the relevant associate’s degree or bachelors’ are, for example, fashion design, accessories design, fashion merchandising and photography. Those studies take about 2 to 4 years to achieve, depending on if it’s an associate degree or a bachelor’s degree.
Who can be a runway model?
As in every modeling category, people aspiring to become a model, or in this case a runway model, you should know and be very confident on why you would fit in this industry. This means, yes you do need a beautiful face and body, but as you may have noticed, it isn’t that uncommon to see people that are “good looking”, so why isn’t everyone a model? Well, the answer can be that while being a model, more specifically a runway model, you will need to be the type of person that will succeed into capturing the public eyes; because you have an “added” value, a strong character within you traits and your physical aspect expresses something unique. This is what will make you become a successful runway model. As mentioned before, it isn’t an easy job nor a career accessible to all. Jobs for runway models
The career opportunity as a runway model is a wide one. There are various areas where you can specialize, such as:
Photographic, advertising and TV commercial, where you will firstly pose for photographers in a studio or any other location and you must take the directions from this same photographer and follow them strictly. For TV commercial modeling you will be asked to act or deliver some lines.
You can also become a professional in fashion modeling, where you will be working closely with stylists, make-up and hair artists, producers and directors. Much of your time will also be spent in going to castings for jobs, keeping your contacts up-to-date and looking carefully after your appearance.
If you want to be an in-house live model for designers and clothing wholesalers, you will be the figure showing the finished clothing to fashion buyers and private customers.
You also have the opportunity to become an alternative model (people with piercings, tattoos, diverse look etc.)
And finally, you could also work in promotional modeling, where you will be demonstrating non-fashion items at product launches and trade fairs.
All of these job opportunities are within the runway modeling industry.
